Mark Bradford is an admired artist from Los Angeles, California who earned his an MFA in 1997 and a BFA in 1995. Mark, who is known for his grid-like abstract paintings combining collage with paints reveals that the working-class sensibilities and mashed-up cultural influences that shaped his childhood in the southern Californinan community, continue to shape his works till date.
Bradford’s map-like, multifaceted paper collages point not only to the organization of streets and buildings in downtown Los Angeles, but also provide striking imagery of crowds, ranging from civil rights demonstrations of the 1960s to present-day protests concerning immigration issues.
Bradford has had numerous exhibitions world over and has won the several renowned awards including the Bucksbaum Award (2006), the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award (2003), the Nancy Graves Foundation Grant (2002) and the Joan Mitchell Foundation Award. Most recently, he was a 2009 recipient of the MacArthur Genius Award.
