John Casey is an artist from Oakland, California, USA and did his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Massachusetts College of Art. John has been into art his whole life, and is best known for his surreal figurative drawings and sculptures. His creations are distorted characters with oversized heads and hands - often the heads of his creatures are separated from the body or are seen with flowers sprouting from the eye sockets.
The artist enjoys exploring the idea of “emotional biomorphology,” a phenomenon that takes place in his imagined universe where physical bodies morph based on the characters’ emotional and psychological states of mind. “My creatures are called monsters by some, but I often feel that the connotations associated with "monster" don't always apply to these little guys unless one can add descriptors like "vulnerable" and "fragile" to the definition of monster. Maybe I have an issue with the monster moniker because I see my critters as self-portraits”, the exceptional artist states.
John has had several successful exhibitions in different parts of the world and continues to stimulate powerful responses from his audiences - from amusement and empathy, to fright and discomfort.
