La Roux, French for 'The Red Haired One' is an electronic duo comprised of singer Elly Jackson, and co-writer and co-producer Ben Langmaid, that has been promising to scorch charts with their album scheduled to release late June. La Roux have however, previewed a number of tracks for the public and the songs, as well as the public reception for them has been promising.
'In For The Kill' is arguably the finest track released so far. Like other La Roux tracks, it starts with an addictive hook that manages to catch the listener's attention in the first few seconds. Elly is a waif-like androgynous female, and singing the track in the heavily 80s inspired video, driving a boxy Toyota in the disco lights- manages to produce a charming effect. The song does droop a little after two minutes when the electro-loop sounds repetitive, but manages to claim back some breath soon enough ending on a nice note.
Quicksand is the next single which has managed to score innumerable remixes already. La Roux is going to be one of the biggest artists in discos in Europe soon, if it isn't already. And this song, with its staccato beats and synthesized voiceover- is another electro gem.
Bulletproof, the third single to be previewed, could be the James Bond song for the new generation, right from its cover-art, to the racy music. It again starts with a catchy hook, it moves to a neat dance number, while Elly keeps the shrill voice locked up for this number as she sings "This time baby, I will be bulletproof".
Although the duo claim to be ""very much a half and half sharing situation" - often the music seems to be a solo act by Elly, with no sighting of Ben anywhere. Nevertheless, the duo is creating glitzy pop numbers, and we are looking forward to their full album end of June. Keep tuned to Culturazzi for updates.
